Author's Note:
So I have been working on this story for a while now. At first one of my friends asked me to write them a story because they love the stories that I tell (They are mostly folklore). I looked in my journal and I had a couple of drafts in it so I chose The Old Couple because it really caught my eye. So I sat down on my computer, opened my mail, and started writing. I made it a to be continued book where you have to wait for the rest of the story. I think it is more excited and interesting that way.
P.S. The date of the post is going to be off because I want the first post to be on top ^_^
I would like some constructive comments, however, I will not tolerate any rudeness. So please you can tell me what I should change and how to make it better, but do it in a nice way.
So here is the first part of the story, hope you enjoy:
The story did not happen long ago, it is still fresh in my memory. It all happened so fast that I'm surprised I survived to tell the tale. I used to live out in the village where there few people, maybe 40. They were all of old age, none were that young, I found out as soon as I arrived that I was the youngest. My name is Klark and I'm a nature scientist, I came to this village because it contains some of the worlds rarest plants. I intend to study these plants for a duration of about two months and no longer. A nice old couple gave me one of their spare cottages if I help them during my stay take care of a couple like shopping, cleaning, and some other stuff.
It all started on a Tuesday morning, the sky was cloudy, it covered the sun. I woke up feeling a little groggy from last night. I stayed up all night studying a flower that only blooms at night time from midnight to sunrise. So I barely got any sleep, because the next day I had promised to help the old couple (Fran and her husband Greg Camin) do some shopping. So I got up, took a shower, and went to the kitchen and made some coffee. The cottage wasn't that big, it is two floors, and it was only meant for one person to live in it, the max is two. The first floor has a living room, a kitchen and half bathroom. When you go upstairs there is only a master bedroom that has a bathroom in it. It's perfect for my kind of work because the living room is spacious.
After getting ready and fully waking up I headed out. The old couples house is only a walk away from where I live, but I have to walk up a hill. They live at the edge of the mountain range where the town is located. From far away it looks like their house is about to fall off the cliff, however, when you get closer that is not the case. I reach the house and knock on the door and wait. two minutes passes, three, four, five, no one answered. I knocked another time and this time I heard footsteps coming toward the door. After a minute or so the door flung open violently and I saw Mr. Camin standing there with an angry expression on his face.
"Hello Klark. I didn't think you were coming today I saw you watching that plant of yours late at night." He said changing the expression on his face immediately.
"Oh, I', used to going to sleep late at night don't worry about it." I said forcing a smile on my face.
"Well, since you are here why don't you go do some shopping for us?" He said walking back into the house and shuffling some papers that were on a small table to the side of the door.
"Okay, are there any specific places I should go?" I asked. The couple are very particular to where I go and get what they need. Sometimes I go places I haven't noticed before but then again I am rarely in town anyway.
"My wife being so great and productive wrote the stuff that we need and the places where you need to get them from. Now make sure you come early we will have breakfast when you get back." He said and closed the door without allowing me to say thank you.
The couple are a little unusual but life is different here so I don't blame them. When I reached town everyone seemed to be in a grim mood. They stared at me suspiciously like I have committed something. I felt like I was in a horror scene. I reached the first store which was in an ally between the hat store and the flower shop. The door was covered with black paper so no one could see the inside. I opened the door and a strange smell welcomed me. It wasn't pleasant it made me want to gag for a moment but then I was over it. I stood at the door for a moment not sure if I wanted to go in or not but then a women came to the door and greeted me. I stood there gazing at her for a while.
"Are you okay?" She said looking at me with big black eyes. She was tall with long dark hair that has a reddish hew to it, and she was wearing all black clothes.
"Yes, I'm okay. Do you happen to have black wax candles?" I ask acting as normal as I could.
"Your in luck we only have five left. They are in such demand these days." She talked to me as though I was a regular customer. "You don't look like the type of person who would be interested in these kind of things."
"And I'm not." I say, "It is for the old couple that live on the edge of the mountain. I'm just doing some shopping for them." A dark expression spreads itself on her pale face.
"Oh." Was all she managed to say, then she disappeared into the back room. When she came back she had an old wooden box. She placed it on the table and rang the cash register.
"Anything else?" She said the ring in her voice now gone.
"No, that is all." I say.
"That will be $50.00," She said. I handed her the cash, she looked at me like she wanted to say something really badly. "If I were you I would get out while I can." She said looking straight into my eyes.
"Nina I need you in the back." A bald man covered in tattoos said while peaking his head from the back door curtains.
"Coming." Nina said and left me there standing in disarray.

The Old Couple Part 2
I left the store not knowing what to think. What she, Nina, said sounded so real, sounded too genuine. I'm just being ridiculous, maybe it was just a joke! They are probably laughing right now! Man, that really made my skin crawl. I guess I better be careful around here people aren't as friendly as I thought they would be. It took a while to finish my shopping, but I got it done just in time for a late breakfast. I didn't notice how hungry I was until I started to climb the hill. The worst part is I'm behind on my work, this couple is starting to get a little more demanding and each time they send to what seems like the ends of the earth to get what they need. Also, the stuff they keep asking me to bring is getting weirder and weirder with every new list.
I reached the house and sat on the stairs to catch my breath. Suddenly a disgusting, burning smell hit me, my stomach couldn't handle it so I vomited very hard on the gravel leading up the stairs. I must have very loud because Mrs. Camin came outside with a jug of water.
"Dear! Are you okay?!" She asked, concern just seeping out of her voice.
"I'm....okay.." I barely said between very deep breaths. I felt my body collapse on the gravel, my body felt very numb, I couldn't move anymore. I heard voices I didn't recognize, I could tell that it was two people, and they weren't speaking English. The first few things were intangible but then they went back to speaking English.
"What are we going to do with him?" The first person asked. It was a male voice.
"We have time to think about it. He is not going to leave for a while. Besides he is living in the cottage, he is not far away." And that is when I passed out completely.
I woke up on a couch, my head was spinning in every direction. That smell was still lingering in my nose, I have never imagined that there was such a horrific smell. I tried to get up with no luck I fell right back down my head hurting even more.
"Don't try to move darling. The head ache will go away after a while." It was Mrs. Camin. She was holding a cup of water and a plate with food on it. I wasn't really hungry that smell really messed my stomach up and I really didn't want to get another vomiting attack again. After a minute or two I was able to sit up, I felt a little groggy but much better.
"I'm not really hungry." I said to Mrs. Camin who was handing me the plate of food.
"But you have to eat something! You didn't have breakfast!" She said again, concern in her voice.
"What happened to you? Did you eat something while you were shopping?" Mr. Camin asked from the door way. He looked rather strange in a way....younger.
"No, actually the only thing that I ate was an apple that I picked from the tree in the front of the cottage." I said.
"Well, I called the doctor he is coming over to take a look at you." He said and came closer, I took a good look at him but now he looked normal. Maybe it was the lighting. The lighting! It was dark outside, how long have been out? The fireplace was lit and a lamp, that was the only source of light in the room.
"How long have I been out?" I asked wide eyed. I must have been really shocked because Mr. Camin was smirking.
"A while." Was all they told me.
The doctor arrived after ten minutes and he had those old bags that doctors used to carry in the old days. That really scared me, I was a little concerned about his knowledge.
"So Mr. Kenso-"
"Please, call me Klark." I interjected.
"Klark, how do you spell that?" He asked writing down on a chart he took out of his bag.
"K L A R K." I said. An amused expression appeared on the doctors face.
"And your last name." He asked
"K E N S O." I said, "Ya, a lot of K's in the family. I guess my parents thought it would be cool if I had the same initials throughout my whole name." I say. All three of them looked at each other and smiled.
"Well, why don't we see what's wrong with you." The doctor finally said.
"I didn't catch your name?" I said. He never really told me what it was to begin with.
"Call me the good doctor." He said smiling, and showing off his huge sparkling white teeth. I must have stared at him in horrific disbelief, because his expression suddenly changed and he said, "I'm just joking with you. Call me doctor Mason." And once again he smiled his creepy smile.

The Old Couple Part 3
I never want to see that man ever again. His smile made my skin crawl. I mean I would rather Jump of a cliff and live in pain and not see that thing ever again. After the so called doctor (Creep of the century to me) I got my appetite back. I ate some of Mrs. Camin's famous omelet. And after that I was off to organize my paper. I had no idea that my research was going to take long, then again I had no idea that there were so many plants that I can study in this area. I went to the cabin tired, I just wanted to sit down and watch some TV, but because of what happened today I was behind on my work and had a lot catching up to do. I went to my desk and sat down looking at the notes that I took and all the research that I have done. I didn't even start on my paper yet and I only had two more weeks left to finish it! I sighed and started to work. First I organized the information that I gathered and looked at what plants I'm going to include in my paper. Then I put them in alphabetical order, but my mind was jumbled mess. I kept thinking about the smell and what happened to me back at the house. I felt somewhat different, released in a way. The doctor said I was fine and nothing was wrong, or should I say he didn't know what happened to me. I sat and thought about what happened, deeply thought about what happened.
The smell was like burning flesh, I should know what that smell because of what happened two years ago. Where could that smell have come from? I mean it makes no sense at all. My concentration was broken when I heard something moving upstairs. It was footsteps, very light footsteps but I could still hear them. I went to the kitchen as fast and as quietly as I can and grabbed the meat cleaver, then headed upstairs. Who ever it was, was in my room. They were messing around in my closet, a thief!
"Slowly come out of the closet." I tried to sound authoritive. "Come with your hand up, I have a gun and I'm not afraid to shoot you if you try something!" I lied. Meat cleaver not really a scary weapon these days.
"Your lying." The man said with a little snicker.
"What did you say?" I tried to sound angry, but I was more impressed than anything else.
"I said you are lying Mr. Klark. I'm very curious, how can you see me?" The man asked. Okay so right about now I'm thinking is guy is a loon. Great! Not only did I throw up today, pass out, meet the creepiest man alive, and have some crazy thoughts about the old couple, I have to deal with a psycho.
"Maybe because I have eyes and 20/20 vision. I don't know maybe something like that." Now was just getting irritated.
"Funny man." He said. He was still lodged in my closet, and very awkwardly may I add.
"You can come out now." I said.
"Alright, but I must warn you, you are not going to like what you are going to see."
And he did, the man I thought to be just a thief turned out to be a more horrific thing. That's exactly what he was a thing. Towering seven feet above the ground, dressed all in black, pale faced, armed with long claws and sharp teeth, and big purple eyes with the weirdest pupils, stood the thief. You can imagine my shock and horror at the image this man represented. I just stood there my mouth falling to the ground staring, just staring. The man smiled and shook his head.

The Old Couple #4
"Good evening." The man says after what seemed forever. Okay, so are a weird looking guy and you have someone in front of you who is obviously never seen something like this before, and all you can say is good evening. Really?
"Good evening to you too." I said. How was I suppose to respond to something like that?
"I see that you are new to all of this." He said looking at me from all directions.
"New to what?" I ask.
"Oh, nothing you will probably find out later on in your life." He said and sighed. Then he started to walk about the room like it was his room and parked himself on my bed.
"Do you have any good books I can borrow?" He asked like we knew each over for since we were young.
"Okay, you have about three seconds to explain what you are doing in my house and why were you looking through my things!" I said very irritated, and overlooking what the man looked like.
"Oh, my I'm sorry for imposing. As I said before you will probably find out sometime in your life about all this." He said and got up to leave.
"Wait." I say. Okay this is really weird and my brain right now is telling me that this is either a dream or it's the pain killers. But! What if this is real? I want to know about this now than later on. It kind of feels like a life and death situation.
"Yes." The man said raising one eyebrow.
"Since I'm going to find out sooner or later why not sooner. Why don't you tell me what's going on?" I said. I put the meat cleaver down showing that I feel no threat from him at all, which is a big lie. And sat on the bed, looked at him, and waited for the answers to come.
"Alright then, I see no harm in telling. Just like you said you are going to find out sooner or later." He paused and waited for a moment. Maybe he is giving me time to think about it and see if I change my mind. But I wasn't going to. Part of me was dying to know what he had to say, the other part was afraid. But my curiosity defeated my fear so I wanted to know.
"I am a shadow. We are creatures that live in another dimension from humans, however it is close enough that some can see us and some get a glimpse, a shadow, of us." He paused again waiting for me to process the information. I nodded for him to go on.
"You are one of those people who can see us. You will never find one shadow that looks like the other. We live like humans, we have schools, families, jobs, even pets."
"Where do you live, I mean how can you build houses and no one noticed?" I asked not knowing how to properly word my question.
"Well we live in another realm so there are doors between our realm and the human one. They are guarded and very secretive. Humans don't like thing like this, they fear us so we stay away. Now the next question is going to be how come I can see you and others don't, correct?" He asks. I nod not saying anything.
"Well, the only way is if you crossed into our realm. Surprisingly you didn't know that, I don't know why." Once he saw my confused expression he stopped.
"Wait what exactly do you go through the door, portal, whatever it is?" I ask my stomach turning. Somehow I didn't want to know the answer to that question.
"Well, it is a very painful experience. It mostly includes intense vomiting and fainting for a while." He said. My heart just stops for a minute I can't believe this!
"Good evening to you too." I said. How was I suppose to respond to something like that?

The Old Couple #5
I just sat there, thoughts swirling in my head, images, feelings, everything is being mixed in one big cauldron and made into one big mushy mess. For a while I lost all my senses, but when everything came back all I can say was, "The old couples house." That's all that came from me.
"Pardon" The man said.
"I know where I passed through the portal. When I entered the old couples house." I said. Maybe it was just a temporary door, maybe it opened by accident.
"Do you mean-"
"Can a portal open suddenly and the close?" I ask cutting him off.
"No, there are rules for that. When a portal is open it stays open for a duration of at least a hundred years. And when a portal closes another one opens somewhere else. As I said before all of the portals can be located within five minutes of their opening and have some guard sent to it right away. Portals always open in remote places, somewhere that is hard to get to. So what's this about an old couples house?" He asked but I wasn't done with the questions. There was one more important question that I needed to ask him.
"Can someone open a portal to the other side?" I asked. Deep inside I wanted the answer to be no, but there was no other explanation for it.
"Yes." He finally said but didn't add anything to it. He knew. "I think we need to talk." He finally added.
"About?" I asked, but I already knew.
"So you think you know where you entered our dimension?" He asked sitting on the chair near my desk.
"Yes, I think it was when I arrived at the old couples house, the Camins, after I did some shopping for them." I said looking out the window directly at the house. He followed my eyes and saw it too.
"It's doesn't look like there is a portal there. Usually the air around the place would be sort of distorted." He said looking back at me.
"I'm pretty sure about it. I mean once I stepped on the first step I felt like my body was going apart, I started to vomit without control, and then I fainted. And I can see you now." There was no other explanation for it. I wanted to find another reason but I always fell short.
"I guess my fears have come true then." He finally said after a moment of thinking.
"What do you mean?" I asked, he sounded pretty serious.
"It means I'm going to need your help solving this mystery and catching the charmers." He said. Then he stood up and motioned for me to follow him.
We walked outside the cabin and walked all the way down to the graveyard that is on the other side of town. It was a long walk but I'm used to it. Our team once got lost in the Amazon jungle and we had to survive without any food or shelter for three days. We hiked for long hours, and the nature of my job demands of me to be fit and ready.
"I'm surprised. You don't look tired at all." He asked when we reached the gate.
"I'm used to it." I said. "You didn't tell me your name."
"Carl Edgar." he said, pretty normal name for a strange man.
"Karl Kenso." I said.
"Hey we have the same first name." he said very excitedly which made him look really weird.
"I guess...." I didn't know how to respond to the statement. "So what are we doing here?" I ask to break the awkward silence.
"There is one portal in this cemetery. It is how I have been entering this dimension." He said.
"Wait why do we need to get to a portal?" I asked.
"Because we need to get you to the other side. There are several
things we need to discuss. And there are two reasons why we can't talk here." He finished.
"And what are the two reasons?" I asked.
"Well, you can't talk to me in front of people because you would look crazy. And secondly there are many spies here and it is very easy for them to hide in this dimension." He finished. We entered the cemetery and we have been walking for ten minutes. We finally reached a catacomb. He clicked some sort of button on top of the door and the door opened. The room was dark it had no windows, and it had nothing but a mirror in it.
"so where is the portal?" I asked.
"The mirror." He simply said.
"Oh." Was all I managed.
"Disappointed?" He asked.
"Yes, yes I am." I said as a matter of fact.
"Well, I guess you have to go first." He said once we approached the mirror.
I stepped close to it without any question and took a long look it. It looked like an ordinary mirror nothing special about it. My curiosity killing me I wanted to know what was on the other side.
"Will this hurt?" I asked thinking back on that morning.
"Only one way to find out." He said.
